how heather finds joy

Heather Hurd, MSW, LCSW, based in Cary, North Carolina, holds a Bachelor’s degree in American Government from the University of Virginia and a Master of Social Work from the University of South Carolina. She completed internships at the Medical University of South Carolina’s Institute of Psychiatry and the Lowcountry Children’s Center, where she deepened her clinical foundation working with diverse and complex populations. Beginning her social work journey in 2003, she has provided compassionate, evidence-based care for over 20 years.

Throughout her career, Heather has worked across a broad continuum of care, including therapeutic foster care, Head Start, day treatment programs, school-based mental health, emergency room social work, psychiatric evaluations of pediatric and adult patients within Duke’s emergency department, hospital-based outpatient clinics, and youth detention. For more than 16 years, her primary focus was on supporting children, adolescents, and their families as they navigate emotional, behavioral, and developmental challenges.

Over time, Heather developed a strong interest in perinatal mental health, recognizing that mothers are often the heart of the family system. She believes that by caring for mothers, we strengthen and support the entire family unit. Her approach is collaborative, compassionate, and individualized. Drawing from Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), strengths-based, solution-focused, and somatic modalities, Heather tailors treatment to meet each client’s unique needs and goals.

Heather is licensed  in North Carolina, rostered in Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT) and holds a Clinical Supervisor Certificate.

Heather believes that everyone deserves an empathetic and kind professional who will listen, offer support, and help them realize their capacity to navigate life’s complexities. She views therapy as a partnership grounded in trust, authenticity, and self discovery.
